Location: 267 Western Ave., Allston
Founded in 2015, Zone 3 is a Harvard-sparked initiative to further activate and energize Western Avenue with creative programs, events, retail experiments, and public art. It has since transformed a cluster of formerly under-utilized spaces along Western Ave. into a vibrant hub of creativity and active space for community engagement. Using repetitive patterns derived from the Zone 3 logo, designer Madeline Jacobson and sign painter Kenji Nakayama collaborated on this sharp geometric backdrop for Zone 3's outdoor events.
Nakayama is a Boston-based sign painter and owner of Need Sign Will Paint who is originally from Hokkaido, Japan. Formerly working as an engineer in Japan, Nakayama made a significant life change in 2004 with a move to Boston to study the art of sign painting and to dedicate his time and energy to art-making. His work ranges from careful pinstriping and hand-painted lettering to hand-cut, multi-layered stencil paintings.
Jacobson is a Boston-based designer who believes that "design truly makes a difference in the way people interact with brands and products, solves important issues, and creates value." She draws inspiration from the technology, innovation, and the artist community in Boston and beyond.
